Itchy Ears :
If your dog is experiencing itchy ears, you can relieve the itchiness by plucking your dog's ear hair using tweezers. Please make sure you use specialised dog ear tweezers which have rounded tips as to not hurt your dog, these will be available from your vet. If the itchiness persists, have your dog checked over by a vet for fungal/bacterial infections or ear mites which could also be causing discomfort. Please seek your vet's advice before performing plucking of the ears.

Toilet Training your puppy:
Toilet training for your puppy should start as soon as the puppy is home with you. You must be prepared to be patient and observant!

There are six times a puppy should be left outside for about 30 minutes to toilet:

  • toilet training for lagotto puppies before going to bed for the night
  • toilet training for lagotto puppies as soon as he wakes up
  • toilet training for lagotto puppies after a nap during the day
  • toilet training for lagotto puppies after eating
  • toilet training for lagotto puppies after exuberant play
  • toilet training for lagotto puppies after you return home from an outing.

Many people take their puppies out for a walk only to see the puppies relieve themselves as soon as they get back indoors. To avoid this, walk the puppy to his toilet area. Stand still with him, allowing the puppy to lose interest in you. Do not sit down as this will only encourage the pup to jump on you and forget what he is out there for.

Praise him if he performs. NEVER rub his nose in any mistakes! Positive reinforcement when he does the right thing in the right place is the best and quickest training method.

Please note that sometimes male puppies take longer to perform than a female.

Digging:

Lots of puppies like to dig. It feels cool and fun on their little feet. It's kind of like kids when they play with fingerpaints. Don't panic if your puppy has dug a few holes in your yard. He might be doing that just because he's a puppy.

Try to give your puppy other things to do so that he won't feel like digging anymore. Many pups will stop digging on their own. But it's still a good idea to entertain and/or distract your puppy with other activities.

The more a dog or puppy is left outside alone, the more he will look for things to do. Those things may include digging up your very well manicured garden.

Clipping your dog's nails:

Important: Please be aware that dog's nails contain blood vessels and live tissue, if you cut them too short you may hurt your dog! We strongly suggest that you get a demonstration from your vet prior to attempting to clip your dog's nails.

Nail clippers are available from Vet Products Direct. (search for the term "nail")

Make sure to reward your dog afterwards.
